Aflame with Love
Selections from the Writing of Blaise Pascal

Modern science would not be the same without him, but Pascal's love for learning paled next to his passion for Christ. Few men have ever lived who thought more deeply upon the nature of reality.

"At an age when others have hardly begun to see the light, he had completed the cycle of human knowledge," and seeing its emptiness, directed his remaining energies to know Him in whom is hidden all the wisdom and the glory of God. Here Pascal found the answer to his heart's desire, and in that assurance, he discovered the Truth that sets men free—the Truth that every man can know by faith in Jesus Christ.

Faith in Action
George Muller

Reflections from a life characterized by faith and answered prayers. Muller's purpose in writing was simple. He saw, in his many years of ministry, that the greatest problem among Christians was a lack of faith in the Lord's provision. He desired to show, through his own personal example, that the Lord was still able to meet the needs of his servants.

It is said that George Muller knew of more than 50,000 specific answers to prayer in his life time.

Holiness
J.C. Ryle

Ryle calls us to live a life set apart from the world and set our minds on things above. Ryle was committed to all forms of evangelism, but his heart beat strongest for mass evangelism in the cities.

Most of Ryle's books are collections of his sermons. His most well-known book, Holiness, was first published in 1877. In a more recent reprint, it is eulogized as "a feast, a goldmine, a spur and heart warmer, food, drink, medicine and vitamin tablet, all in one."

John R. Mott: That the World May Believe
Edited by Lon Allison

John Mott spurred global evangelism unlike any other Christian in the first half of the twentieth century. Mott knew Christ, loved Christ and was led by Christ. He viewed mission as both word and deed, and before his death in 1955, he had conceived, partnered, led and funded much of the missional focus of the evangelical world.

This booklet is arranged around the four distinctives of his life: evangelism, student mobilization, cooperation and spiritual formation.

The readings in this booklet are selected from Chapman's book Light on the Way in which he lays out the plan of salvation, the believer's identity in Christ and helpful teachings for the Christian pilgrimage.

Practicing the Presence of God
Brother Lawrence

Brother Lawrence's early years were marked by periods of doubt, seasons of temptation and times when he despaired of his salvation. Out of this soul-searching came a deeper illumination and trust.

Thereafter, he walked "before God simply, in faith, with humility and love," applying himself "diligently to do nothing and think nothing" which might displease his Lord. He lived the rest of his life in active perseverance of the Presence of God.

Preacher and Prayer

Say a Good Word for Jesus
John Watson

Though this Scottish tale was written as fiction, many of the characters in the story resemble people Watson knew in his pastorate. Whatever the historical background of this tale, the principal admonition could not be more realistic or more timely. Everyone should be bold to speak up for Jesus. When all is said and done, He is all we have to preach.

The Saints Everlasting Rest
Richard Baxter

A Puritan pastor born in 1615, Baxter wrote more than 140 books before his death in 1691. His literary accomplishments are impressive considering his continual battle against poor health and near invalid status. His battle with a life threatening illness at age 35 provided the context for The Saints' Everlasting Rest.

As Baxter meditated on the joys of heaven, which he soon expected to enter, he wrote down his thoughts. He eventually recovered, and published his reflections. The work was a runaway best seller. The original work covered 844 pages. In 1758 it was condensed to 16 chapters, and in this booklet we present Chapters 11-13 in an edited and condensed form. This work has inspired Christians for centuries to lift their eyes above this world to the place where they will spend eternity.

The Scripture Way of Salvation
John Wesley

Few persons have every lived who exerted more positive influence on their time than John Wesley. His prodigious life and work, spanning most of the Eighteenth Century, epitomized and gave direction to an evangelical revival that changed the face of England.

Into this generation of despair, seething on the verge of revolution, John Wesley began to herald a Gospel of free and full salvation—a deliverance which any person can know through simple faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

The three sermons reproduced in this book typify this preaching—the kind of preaching that uncovers the depths of sin while exalting the heights of redeeming grace.

The Way of Holiness
Phoebe Palmer

In 1837, at the age of 30, Phoebe Palmer consecrated herself to God and later experienced what she called entire sanctification, through the process described in The Way of Holiness. Over the next 37 years, she worked out all the implications of her complete surrender to God.

By her willingness to preach and write, Palmer also promoted women's rights. In addition to the rest of her service to the Lord, she delivered food, clothing and medicine to people in need.

The Way of Holiness outlines much of Palmer's theology of holiness, faith and testimony. Readers today will find its counsel helpful in pursuing the way to that holiness of life which God has called His people to follow.

Words to Winners of Souls
Horatius Bonar

Bonar felt deeply the plight of people without Christ and the urgency of getting the saving gospel to them. He became recognized as a powerful preacher and gifted writer. Running through his work whether preaching or writing, is a fervent yet loving call to holiness of life and work, which meant to him simply Christ-likeness.

While focusing on the need for evangelism, the underlying theme in Words to Winners of Souls is getting right with God and walking every day in fellowship with Christ.

Though first published more than 130 years ago, the words still speak to persons who yearn to be winners of souls, sanctified, fitted for the Master's use.
