The Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to carefully selected students who are preparing for Christian service outside North America.

They may enroll in any MA degree program at Wheaton Graduate School:

  • Biblical and Theological Studies
  • Clinical Psychology (terminal—not leading to a Doctor of Psychology)
  • Christian Formation and Ministry
  • Counseling Ministries
  • Evangelism
  • Intercultural Studies/TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

Certain funds provide financial assistance to Christians in urban ministry, especially those of ethnic minority background, desiring further preparation for Christian service in the urban areas of North America.

What the Awards Cover
Billy Graham Center awards are generous, but not full scholarships. It is the responsibility of the recipient to raise additional funds needed to complete program costs. Scholarships are paid out at the beginning of each term; they do not cover the cost of pre-requisite or proficiency hours that may be required.

Awards for international leaders are given on a loan/scholarship basis. For each year served back in their ministries after the completion of MA studies, 25% of the loan is forgiven. If the recipient does not return to his or her ministry and homeland, loan repayment of both principal and interest is required. The funds received are for related expenses of tuition, board, room, clothing, books and medical expenses. Students are responsible for transportation costs (to and from Wheaton or during stay), personal miscellaneous expenses, and, normally, a portion of their room and board.

Furloughing missionary and urban ministry awards are usually full-tuition grants, covering the cost per course-hour during each term of residency. Awards are given on a loan/scholarship basis, with 25% forgiven for each year served overseas following completion of MA studies; otherwise, loan repayment is required, both principal and interest.

Awards for pre-field missionary candidates are also on the same loan/scholarship basis, but the grants are smaller; however, such applicants are eligible for other financial aid from the college. Completion of the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) questionnaire and the Wheaton College Institutional Financial Aid form are required.

History of the Program
The Scholarship Program began in 1975. Since it's beginning, it has been an important aspect of the Billy Graham Center. The program has received generous endowment by stewards committed to missions and evangelism. Their vision was to equip key leaders for significant ministry opportunities in order to strengthen the Church of Jesus Christ worldwide. Originally, awards were only for international leaders; they now include missionaries on furlough, those who are preparing for missionary careers outside of North America, and urban ministry leaders.

What the Program has accomplished
Since the program began, over 800 international, furloughing missionary and pre-field missionary students have received advanced degree training. For the majority, the dream of further training for more effective service would not come true without this financial assistance. An important fact is that nearly 200 international Christian leaders have benefitted from the Billy Graham Center Scholarship Program.

NOTE: Full-time graduate study (with the exception of urban ministry award recipients) in the declared academic program and maintaining of the necessary grade point average for graduation are requirements for each award recipient.
